When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. (Mark 6:34)
Did you catch that?
Throngs of people clamoring for the Master’s help were tailing Jesus and his disciples, who were hungry and exhausted. Jesus’ heart, the heart of a true shepherd, went out to the people, and he helped them.
How did he help them? (This is the part that’s surprising.) He began teaching them many things.
Now, if Jesus had helped the people by touching all the sick and healing them—which did on other occasions—it wouldn’t surprise us. If Jesus had waved his hand and solved the people’s problems and made them feel happy—that seems like something Jesus might do. But that’s not what Jesus did. He began teaching them.
Jesus helped people by teaching them. He helped hearts and minds and souls. The shepherd fed his sheep with nothing less than the very words of God. He still helps people by teaching them.
That’s why the Solid Education Foundation exists. Jesus loves our children, and he loves to teach them. Using our Christian schools, our Savior teaches our kids every day. He uses fallible but committed Christian teachers, working in tandem with us fallible but committed parents, to teach and build up our kids’ spirits, minds and bodies. In our Lutheran schools, Jesus teaches our children about their need for him. Jesus teaches our children about the amazing love that burns in his heart for each of them, a love that suffered death and rose to life for them. Jesus teaches our children that they have a real purpose in this life and a certainty of joy in the next.
The Solid Education Foundation deeply appreciates the fellow Christians who support its mission of providing scholarships to families committed to Christian education. Consider a further contribution, so that together we can help more children be taught by their Good Shepherd in our Lutheran Schools.
